Acupuncture is part of an ancient Chinese method
of diagnosis and treatment called Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM). TCM is a holistic approach to health which views the patient
as an organism with interrelated energetic parts rather than breaking the
individual down into separate systems and symptoms. Holistic Medicine is an
approach that considers the animal as a whole... body, mind, spirit, diet and
environment. It can be Eastern, Western or Integrated in its basic philosophy
and still be holistic.
 Holistic Medicine-Wholeistic
medicine helps explain the general approach that we take when
evaluating cases in our practice. Conventional medicine tends to look at the
symptoms and then address the problem by trying to alleviate those symptoms.
Holistic medicine tends to look at the symptoms and try to figure out why those
symptoms are present. We then try to address the root cause of those symptoms
and if the treatment is successful, the symptoms subside. Rather than an
alternative therapy to Western veterinary medicine, we prefer to think of
veterinary acupuncture as complementary and integrative therapies.
The holistic approach means doing what
is best for the total health and welfare of the pet and if that includes
conventional methods that should be done also. TCM uses acupuncture and herbs
along with some other techniques to correct imbalances in the body and allow a
patient to heal.
Acupuncture and
herbal medicine (for people and animals) have been practiced in
China for thousands of years! Since the late 70's, the study and practice of
acupuncture, both for humans and pets, has gained greater understanding and
acceptance in the U.S. and abroad. The American Veterinary Medical Association
has called acupuncture an integral part of veterinary medicine. Additionally,
the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health have
officially recognized acupuncture as an effective treatment for many conditions
& diseases. For more information, please go to our link
